Tips for using Google
Google can be a simple search website, but if you know its wide possibilities, your search might be much easier and accurate. Here I have summarized some of my tips for using Google search engine.
1. Using the "Advanced Search" options
a. Searching sites of specific language - select the language of the sites to search in only via the "Language" list..
b. Searching pages of a specific file format – select the requested file format via the "File type" list.
c. To limit the search for pages which were updated for the last Day, Week, Month or Year, select the requested update range via the "Date" list.
d. It is possible to limit the search region by Title, Links, URL, Text or anywhere by selecting the requested region via the "Where your keywords show up" list.
e. It is possible to limit the search by "Regions", for example: select Israel from the Region list to look for keyword under all sites related to Israeli region, i.e., all domains ending with the IL of their top level domain.
2. General search tips
a. Use Exact search phrase by placing the search phrase in inverted commas, i.e.: "tennis championship"
b. Use either one word or another by using OR, i.e.: tennis OR championship will search sites containing either the whole phrase "tennis championship" or contains the word tennis or contains the word championship.
c. To exclude search results which contain specific phrase use the minus character before the word, i.e.: "tennis championship" –pingpong will return all results containing the exact phrase tennis championship and DO NOT contain the word pingpong.
d. To limit your search within a specific domain use the initial site:<domain> before or after the searched keywords, i.e.: "tennis championship" OR pingpong site:smrt.co.il will look for pingpong or "tennis championship" under smrt.co.il site only. You could also use site:.com to look for the keywords under all domains ending with .com.
e. Use ~ in order to look for a keyword or its synonyms, for example: looking for ~mobile phone will return results containing "phone", "cell", "cellular", "wireless" etc.
f. Use … in order to define range of values for the results, for example: athletics 1985…1990 will return searched pages which contain the keyword athletics and the numbers between the range 1985 to 1990 (which can help to search values between years etc.).
g. To look for definitions of a keyword use define: before the keyword, for example: define:airplane will return all pages which define the word airplane.
h. To look for pages which contain linkage to a specific URL use link:<url>, for example: url:www.smrt.co.il/home.php will return all pages which have linkage to www.smrt.co.il/home.php.
